Portland, Maine

Portland is the largest city in Maine with a population of 64,000+ according to the 2000 census. Tourists are drawn to Portland's historic Old Port district along Portland Harbor, which is at the mouth of the Fore River and part of Casco Bay, and the Arts District, which runs along Congress Street in the center of the city. Portland Head Light in nearby Cape Elizabeth is also a popular tourist draw. The city seal depicts a phoenix rising out of ashes, which aligns with its motto, Resurgam, Latin for "I will rise again", in reference to Portland's recoveries from four devastating fires. The city of Portland, Oregon, was named for Portland, Maine.

Dinner by the Sea

Saturday after checking out the Cape Elizabeth
Lighthouse we decided to have dinner by the sea.
The Lobster Shack Restaurant was just across
a parking lot from the lighthouse.

It was very nice to have dinner by sea.

Portland Head Light and Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse

Portland Head Lighthouse is located in Fort
Williams Park in South Portland. It's 80 ft.
fieldstone tower was completed in 1791 during
George Washington's third year as President
of the United States.


The Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse is located
about a quarter mile offshore of the Portland
Head Light. It is 72 feet tall and made with nearly
3,000 tons of granite completed in 1905.

atop a wooden tripod dating back to 1873.

Cape Neddick Light aka Nubble Light and York Beach

Cape Neddick Lighthouse is known by the local
fisherman as "Nubble Light". Cape Neddick
Lighthouse is on a barren island known as the
"nubble". This lighthouse has warned mariners
of the deadly rocky island since 1879.
